Boardman Books: History and Theology
Product image The Writings of Richard Beard   ~  Book ~ by Richard Beard. Richard Beard (1799-1880), the first professor in the Theological School at Cumberland University, received the A.B. degree from Cumberland College, Princeton, Kentucky, in 1832. On graduation he was named Professor of Greek and Latin at Cumberland College. He remained at Cumberland for six years before moving to Sharon College in Mississippi. Beard returned to Princeton as president of Cumberland College in September 1843, and held the position to February 1854. His inauguration as Professor of Systematic Theology in Cumberland University took place on March 13, 1854. He was still teaching for Cumberland University at the time of his death.

Beard wrote two volumes of Cumberland Presbyterian biography. The first, Brief Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was self-published by the author in 1867, but the second, Brief Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church: Second Series, was published by the Cumberland Presbyterian Board of Publication in 1874. Both volumes have now been out of print for over 130 years. Rare book dealers demand over a hundred dollars for either volume in sound readable condition.

Montana’s Kessinger Publishing sells an unauthorized low-quality reproduction of the first volume for $30.95. According to the publisher, In the interest of creating a more extensive selection of rare historical book reprints, we have chosen to reproduce this title even though it may possibly have occasional imperfections such as missing and blurred pages, missing text, poor pictures, markings, dark backgrounds and other reproduction issues beyond our control. Because this work is culturally important, we have made it available as a part of our commitment to protecting, preserving and promoting the world’s literature. This volume collects all of the biographies from both of Beard’s volumes. They are free from missing text and the other problems that trouble the Kessinger edition. The 41 biographies are presented in alphabetical order along with Beard’s autobiographical sketch, Fifty Years a Teacher, from The Theological Medium, A Cumberland Presbyterian Quarterly as it was originally presented in 1879.
